What vehicles can it be fitted to?
The most popular vehicle is the VW Camper Van (Type 2 1967 to present day), various sports cars, such as MG, Jaguar and Classic Landrovers.

Is it safe?
The unit is 'Fail Safe' and this relates to how the EPAS reacts to the unlikly event of a electrical fault. In this instance the unit will shut down and offer no assistance, However the feel of the steering will revert back to how it felt before the EPAS was fitted. As this feeling is familiar to the driver it will not cause alarm.
As you can appreciate safety is at the utmost importance and we have kept this in mind during the designing and manufacturing process. All our components are to the very highest standards by UK companies.
The unit is a GKN power unit with a Electronic Control Unit (ECU) to adjust power as it is required. The power unit has a input shaft and output shaft, both using external splines. The ECU takes inputs from a wheel speed sensor (utilising a ABS sensor on vehicles without ABS) and a signal from the ignition system. Along with a torque sensor on the steering column (this monitors effort made by the driver on the wheel) it can power the motor as required.
When the vehicle is at standstill the unit will offer maximum assistance and this gradually decreases until it reaches around 40 mph when it gives little or no input.
There are other companies supplying these systems, however they have decided to "mig weld" the shafts together. Unless the welding is carried out by registered welders and the welds x-rayed, this is a less than ideal option as it means the unit cannot be removed. We have made our connecting shafts from high tensile steel with spark eroded internal splines.
The lower part of the VW steering column was originally welded together. We have square-pegged the plate to the shaft and "tig welded" both parts together. Consequently, this design does not rely on the weld, but it is there for extra safety. The outer column housing is made of high quality aluminium and has a 3mm thick wall with a high torsional resistance.
